They keep us connected to everyone except the people in the room, and awake long after we meant to fall asleep. A quick check before bed turns into forty minutes of scrolling, and by morning we're already behind.
As three high school students who've grown up with a phone in our hands, we noticed that no matter how much we wanted to put it down at night, the pull to check one more thing always won. Willpower kept losing.
The simplest fix would've been to leave our phones in another room, but a phone is also our alarm, our flashlight, our way to reach family in an emergency. We didn't want to give any of that up. So instead of asking people to live without their phones, we built something that keeps the phone in the room, in plain sight, just out of reach until morning.
